Source: Revista Lengua y Habla. Author s : Agelvis, Valmore; Arellano, Frank. Abstract: This paper deals with an approach to the presumptive meaning of manchetas found in El Nacional, a daily newspaper from Venezuela. A mancheta is a brief text having only one statement. It is usually published with Op-Eds, and its contents may be controversial when related with nation life or with public figures.
Thus, a mancheta normally includes humorous discourse with social criticism. Analyses were based on Levinson's theory of generalized conversational implicature GCI. According to this theory, presumptive meanings can be studied as implicatures triggered from a metalinguistic mechanism, which depends on three heuristics.
Based on them, the recipient of a message may get the meaning of the expression transmitted. GCIs and Particular Conversational Implicatures PCIs were studied to determine pragmatic elements used in statements whose contents would not be read literally.
